Sentimental Journey

Here is my colored pencil drawing of the last passenger train at the Union Station. In 1957 the last passenger train left the Union Station in Lexington, KY. Passenger service continued to Lexington until 1968, then discontinued when Amtrak took over operation of the passenger trains in the US.

On May 9, 1957, the last passenger train (the Chesapeake & Ohio’s George Washington) departed from this facility. The station was closed due to high operating overhead and low passenger travel. In March 1960, the building was demolished by the Cleveland Wrecking Company and a parking garage was built in its place.

The photo used for this drawing is from the John C. Wyatt Herald-Leader Collection, used with permission.
